Nutrition and Minimal Vaccination
We feed our poodles and wean our puppies to a varied raw diet. We also use Ziwipeak freeze dried raw, Honest Kitchen and Earthborn Primal grain free kibble for treats. Some links below for learning about a raw diet. We started feeding raw in 2004 and could not be more pleased with the health and condition of our poodles. They are well muscled, bright and Dams whelp healthy very vigorous puppies and best of all our poodles have beautiful white teeth! We no longer worry which kibble is next on the recall list and the poodles food is never further away than the nearest grocery store.
12 Benefits of feeding raw, the short list
If you are ready to think outside the bag, consider all the benefits of feeding
a raw diet to your pet.
1.No doggy odor
2.Naturally cleans teeth – no need for
toothbrushes, de-scaling jobs, or gum disease
3.The time it takes for a dog to chew a raw meaty
bone gives their stomach adequate time to get the acids moving
4.Much less stool produced – and they are firm,
and turn chalky after a couple of days
5.Decreased or non-existent vet bills (your dogs
are healthier!)
6.Less cost for dog food – commercial dog foods
are expensive
7.Mirrors what a dog would be getting in the
wild – and certainly even the modern day dog has a digestive tract exactly the
same as a wolf
8.Puppies develop at a more appropriate rate –
and quick growth spurts are avoided. This puts less strain on developing
joints, fewer problems later
9.Balances blood sugars, lowers hyperactivity
10.They love to eat- no more “picky eater”
11.Maintains the natural digestive enzymes, aids
in digestion (less gas, diarrhea, and constipation)
12.Anal glands work as nature intended
Based on my experiences, both with my dogs and my
customer’s dogs, feeding raw has decreased the number of vet visits
substantially. Dental scaling s that were once required annually, are now
not needed at all! Medications and special Rx shampoos once needed for
red, itchy skin are now a thing of the past! Pets who have had urinary
issues and have had to succumb to the dreaded Rx diet (which is loaded with
CORN!!) are now eating raw and having great results. Raw food contains
approximately 70% moisture, which has been proved to greatly improve overall
health; it is easier for your pet’s system to assimilate the ingredients and
nutrients.

Vacination
Be your dog’s advocate – protect him with knowledge and by taking a stand against unnecessary vaccination. His life may depend on it!

The Bordetella vaccination
http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/bordatella-vaccination-dogs/
Immune compromised humans and animals are at an elevated risk of infection
from these canine vaccines. There is a recently reported case of Bordetella
bronchiseptica pneumonia in a kidney and pancreas transplant patient who had to
board and subsequently vaccinate her dogs at a veterinary clinic while she was
hospitalized. Vaccines contain contaminating agents including mycoplasmas which
are also very communicable to humans and other mammals.
In the end, vaccination for Bordetella is at best fruitless and at worst, a
pathetic fraudulence at the hands of veterinarians and vaccine manufacturers.
It is up to you whether or not your dog receives this vaccination and that is
not overstating the obvious. Sadly, most pet owners are aware of this but
choose vaccination because they feel they are at the mercy of boarding kennels,
training schools and veterinarians.
Minimal Vaccination Schedule By Dr. Jean Dodds
The following vaccine protocol is offered by Dr. Dodds for those dogs where minimal vaccinations
are desirable. The schedule is one I recommend and should not
interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be
less satisfactory. It's a matter of professional judgment and
choice. Many Vets still recommend yearly vaccine boosters, please do your research before possibly causing damage to your Poodles long term health.
Age of Pups
9 - 10 weeks Distemper + Parvo virus, MLV (e.g.
Intervet
14 weeks Distemper + Parvo virus, MLV (e.g.
Intervet
16 -18 weeks (optional) Distemper + Parvo virus, MLV (e.g.
Intervet
6 months to 1 year Rabies, killed 3-year product
(give 3-4 weeks apart from
distemper/parvo virus
booster)
Please do not damage your Poodles Immune System by over vaccinating!
1 year of age: Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvo virus every three years
thereafter, or more often, if desired. Vaccinate for rabies
virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a
written waiver needs to be
obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In
that case, a rabies antibody
titer can also be performed to accompany the
waiver request. See www rabieschallengefund.org
